Daniel Sams rushed for 164 yards and one touchdown and threw for 134 yards and another score as McNeese State defeated Stephen F. Austin 28-14 in Southland Conference play on Saturday night.
Sams broke for a 76-yard touchdown run with 6:05 left in the fourth quarter to give McNeese State (2-0, 2-0 Southland Conference) a 28-14 advantage and seal the win.
Kent Shelby had seven catches for 81 yards and one touchdown for the Cowboys.
Trailing 7-0, Stephen F. Austin (0-3, 0-1) scored twice to lead 14-7 in the first quarter. The Cowboys took over in the second quarter, scoring 14 points for a 21-14 halftime advantage, and shut out the Lumberjacks for the rest of the game.
Stephen F. Austin's Hunter Taylor threw for 187 yards and two touchdowns.
