Jeff Short had 28 points and seven rebounds, leading Norfolk State to a 71-65 win over Division II Mercy (N.Y,) Wednesday night.

William Robinson's layup with 2:01 remaining for Mercy drew the Mavericks to 65-60, but baskets from Zaynah Robinson and Preston Bungei put the Spartans up by nine with 1:04 to play.

Mercy shot just 33 per cent from the field, and its starting lineup combined to miss 39 of 58 shots. Shaquille Stokes was 7 of 20 for 20 points, and Tyseem Lyles had 13 points on 4-of-12 shooting to go with six rebounds.
