Sporting Gijon earned promotion to Spain's first division on Sunday, after beating already promoted Real Betis 3-0 on the final day of the season.

Sporting finished second ahead of Girona on goal average in the second tier, after Girona conceded a late goal to Lugo and drew 1-1.

Sporting most recently played in the top flight from 2008 to 2012.

Girona, Las Palmas, Valladolid and Real Zaragoza — the third-to-sixth place finishers — will compete in a two-round playoff to determine the third team to go up.
