Teo Gutierrez, Islam Slimani and Bryan Ruiz all scored in the first half as Sporting Lisbon defeated Benfica 3-0 to take the Portuguese league lead on Sunday.

Gutierrez opened the scoring in the ninth minute, Slimani added to the lead in the 21st and Ruiz sealed the victory in the 36th at the Estadio da Luz.

Benfica hadn't lost a Portuguese league game at home since 2012. It hadn't lost to Sporting at home since 2006.

Sporting reached 20 points from eight matches, two points more than FC Porto, which was held to a 0-0 by Sporting Braga at home. Benfica is only eighth with 12 points.

The victory over Benfica was extra special to coach Jorge Jesus, who moved to Sporting last summer after six seasons with Benfica.
