Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews won the toss on Wednesday and elected to bat first in the opening test against India here at Galle.
India selected five specialist bowlers, including three spinners. The visitors were forced to leave out opener Murali Vijay with a hamstring injury, and he was replaced by Lokesh Rahul.
Sri Lanka recalled left-arm spinner Rangana Herath after he was dropped for the third test against Pakistan last month.
The series is the last in a long test career for Sri Lanka's star batsman Kumar Sangakkara.
