Swiss time trial specialist Fabian Cancellara will miss this month's world championships in Virginia after injuries and illnesses derailed his season.
Cancellara has withdrawn from the Spanish Vuelta because of stomach problems. He said Thursday he was ending his season early. Cancellara also broke two vertebrae in a crash this year.
The time trial gold medallist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Cancellara would have been among the favourites in the race against the clock in Richmond. He has won four world championships and three bronze medals in the discipline.
Cancellara would have competed with Trek Factory Racing in the team time trial.
