Valencia says goalkeeper Diego Alves will require surgery on a torn ligament in his right knee.

The Brazilian goalkeeper injured his leg and had to be substituted in the second half of Valencia's 3-2 win at Almeria on Saturday. That victory earned the team a fourth-place finish in the Spanish league and a Champions League berth for next season.

The 29-year-old Diego Alves, known as a specialist at saving penalties, has been Valencia's first-choice goalkeeper for the past four seasons.
