Gyasi Zardes scored two goals early in the second half, and the Los Angeles Galaxy beat the 10-man San Jose Earthquakes 3-1 in the 2016 opener of the California Clasico rivalry on Saturday night.

Jelle Van Damme headed it down across the front of the goal and Zardes finished with a toe punch in the 56th minute. Zardes doubled the lead six minutes later with an opportunistic stab at Kip Colvey's errant clearance attempt.

Robbie Keane capped the scoring with a penalty kick for the Galaxy (2-1-0) in the 91st minute.

The Earthquakes (2-1-0) went down a man in the third minute of first-half stoppage time when Simon Dawkins was sent off for a lunging scissor tackle on Sebastian Lletget.

Chris Wondolowski scored in the 89th minute to pull the Quakes within 2-1.
