An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.5 has shaken the inland region of Southern California.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake occurred at 6:42 a.m. Wednesday and was centred 2 miles (3 kilometres) north of Banning, about 85 miles (135 kilometres) east of Los Angeles.

A Riverside County sheriff's dispatcher in the region says it was felt but there were no immediate calls about damage or injury.
