Brazil's government has suspended subsidized bus transportation for Haitian immigrants travelling from the border with Peru in the northern state of Acre to Sao Paulo, the country's biggest city.

The suspension was ordered after some 500 immigrants arrived in Sao Paulo over the past week, saturating the city's facilities used to shelter them.

More than 50,000 Haitians have migrated to Brazil since 2012, when Brazil started granting humanitarian visas following the 2010 earthquake that devastated Port-au-Prince.

Unable to get a visa at the Brazilian Embassy in Port-au Prince, many Haitians travelled to Panama and then to Peru to cross the border into Acre. From there they were bused to Sao Paulo in search of jobs.
