Officials say slum dwellers have clashed with police sent to evict about 80 families from government-owned land in Brazil's biggest city.

Protesting residents hurled rocks and torched 10 cars and one bus in efforts to prevent police from entering the slum in the district of Cidade Tiradentes. Police responded with tear gas and pepper spray.

Police say the clashes ended early Thursday and people started leaving the slum, heading to temporary shelters or to the homes of friends or relatives. No one was arrested or hurt.

The Sao Paulo Housing Authority says low-income housing units will be built on the land that had been illegally occupied for 15 years.
