The main truckers' union in the Dominican Republic has blocked transport of all freight through border crossings into neighbouring Haiti.
Union president Blas Peralta said Monday truckers are protesting recent violence against Dominican truckers by Haitians. He says the blockade will continue until Haiti provides better security on its side of the border.
Normally, some 200 trucks each day bring tons of food, construction materials and other goods to border crossings on the island of Hispaniola, which is shared by the two countries. Haiti is the Dominican Republic's biggest export market after the U.S.
The truckers' protest comes as the Dominican Republic has been under international scrutiny for immigration policies that affect mostly Haitians and people of Haitian descent.
