Authorities say a homemade bomb was hurled at the foundation of Brazil's former president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The Sao Paulo state Public Safety Department says the bomb was tossed from a car at the Lula Institute late Thursday night, There were no injuries and only minor damage to a garage door.

The institute said the blast was a political attack, though the motive for the attack remains unclear.

Prosecutors are investigating allegations that Silva was paid to sway foreign leaders into awarding inflated contracts to the Odebrecht construction firm and push Brazil's state development bank to give the company over $1 billion in low-interest loans. Reports of the alleged incidents emerged after he left office.
