Honduras' besieged president has signalled his willingness to consider an opposition demand for formation of an international commission to root out government corruption similar to one established in neighbouring Guatemala.
President Juan Orlando Hernandez said in a news conference Friday that the time had come to install a culture of transparency with international support.
In Guatemala, a United Nations-sponsored commission has been active since 2006. This year, its work led to the resignation of the country's vice-president in connection with a fraud scheme.
Hernandez had been resistant to calls for a similar body in Honduras, but has remained under constant pressure from a street-level movement that began marching in May enraged by a public health scandal.
The movement has called for Hernandez's resignation and an international court to investigate corruption.
