Police in Jamaica say they have arrested two men suspected in the fatal shooting of a rookie officer in a gritty neighbourhood of the capital.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force said Wednesday that the two men wanted for the slaying of Constable Lynden Barrett have been detained in separate operations. They identified the suspects as residents of Denham Town in gang-heavy West Kingston.

The 23-year-old police constable was shot and killed on a street in Denham Town on July 21.

Residents of the poor community have insisted that Barrett was killed by police colleague shooting wildly. But Police Commissioner Carl Williams has said he knows "for sure that the criminals are responsible for it."
