U.S. officials say Mexico has extradited an alleged leader of a forced-prostitution ring that operated in the New York City area to face charges in the United States.

A statement from the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City says Paulino Ramirez-Granados faces charges including sex trafficking, alien smuggling and money laundering in the Eastern District of New York

It said Thursday that Ramirez-Granados has been on the list of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's 10 most-wanted suspected human traffickers since 2010.

Ramirez-Granados is alleged to have been part of a family group that used physical abuse, threats and trickery to force at last 25 young Mexican women to work as prostitutes.

He was arrested March 31 in the central Mexico city of Tenancingo on a U.S. extradition warrant.
