Riot police clashed with striking workers demanding the reinstatement of fired employees at a Nicaraguan gold mine.

By midday Saturday, police had not said how many people were arrested or injured, but witnesses saw two police officers bleeding after being hit by rocks and two local residents being arrested for not leaving street blockades.

The protests at El Limon mine, located 90 miles (145 kilometres) from Managua, began when miners say Vancouver-based B2Gold company fired three union leaders. Protesters are calling for their reinstatement.

Earlier in the month, clashes left one police dead and 23 injured, along with eight injured protesters. Nicaraguan officials say the police officer was beaten to death, while miners say he died of a heart attack. The miners also burned a local police station and set up barricades in the streets.

B2Gold Corp. has called the blockade of the mine illegal and urged an end to the violence.
