Estonia has appointed a new foreign minister to replace Keit Pentus-Rosimannus, who resigned after a court ruling connected her to the bankruptcy of her father's company.

Marina Kaljurand, 52, took office immediately after being appointed on Wednesday.

Kaljurand, a career diplomat, has worked at Estonia's Foreign Ministry since the Baltic country regained independence in 1991, serving as the Estonian ambassador in Moscow and Washington.

Pentus-Rosimannus, a member of the ruling Reform Party, stepped down two weeks ago after a Tallinn appeal court ordered her and other defendants to pay the claims of creditors in the bankruptcy case of her father's freight company. She said she would appeal.

The court linked Pentus-Rosimannus to the company but it was unclear if she was directly connected to running the business.
