A new report calls for investment in clean energy to be tripled to $1.2 trillion through 2030 to give more than one billion people worldwide access to electricity and help prevent global warming.
Adnan Amin, director-general of the International Renewable Energy Agency said Wednesday the goal can be achieved, pointing to major advances in using solar power and other renewables to power national grids, villages and homes especially in the developing world.
The report produced by the World Bank and some 20 other organizations and agencies tracks progress on the Sustainable Energy for All initiative which calls for achieving three targets by 2030: universal access to modern energy services, doubling the rate of improvement in energy efficiency, and doubling the share of renewables in the global energy mix.
