A former lawmaker, his son, and two other people have been shot to death in a crime-ridden northern region that is a hotbed for marijuana smuggling.

Paraguay's Interior Minister said Magdaleno Silva was killed Tuesday morning in the town of Yby Yau, in the state of Concepcion, about 240 miles (380 kilometres) north of the capital, Asuncion.

Silva's son, Fernando, and two other unidentified people who were with them, also were killed. Authorities are investigating the crime and have not released more details.

Silva had failed to win his re-election to the lower house of Congress representing the Colorado party in 2013. He had recently been running as a pre-candidate for municipal mayor of his community.
