A member of a Mennonite colony in Paraguay is pleading a guerrilla group for the release of his kidnapped son, saying he already has paid a ransom.

Abraham Fehr read a statement on local radio Wednesday asking the Paraguayan People's Army to release his son, who is also named Abraham.

He said his family has not received proof that the son is still alive despite paying the small leftist rebel group $500,000 after the August kidnapping.

The Fehr family lives in the Manitoba Mennonite colony located about 190 miles (300 kilometres) north of the Paraguayan capital.

Officials accuse the rebels of carrying out killings, kidnappings, bank robberies and attacks on police.
