Portugal's government has bowed to police demands for a shorter working week and early retirement, but some police labour groups aren't happy and are promising street demonstrations.
The government approved new labour regulations for the urban police force, called Policia de Seguranca Publica, on Thursday — the day those police said they would stop handing out traffic fines if their demands weren't met.
Five weeks before a general election, the government awarded the PSP pay rises, a 36-hour work week instead of the current 40 hours, and a right to take their pension at age 60, compared with the usual 66.
But the government didn't bow to other demands from the Guarda Nacional Republicana, a paramilitary police force which patrols rural areas, and its labour leaders vowed public protests.
