Puerto Rico's government says it will extend water rationing measures to the island's southern region amid a worsening drought.

The water and sewer company said Tuesday that water levels are running low in a large underground aquifer south of the capital of San Juan.

Officials said there will be water interruptions every 12 hours starting Thursday. More than 17,500 households will be affected.

Water rationing measures already are affecting nearly 400,000 people across the U.S. territory. Some receive water every third day and others every second day.
