The state-run Seychelles News Agency says presidential elections in the Indian Ocean archipelago will go to a second round because none of the six candidates got a clear majority.
The agency said Sunday that because no candidate got more than 50 per cent of the votes cast, a run off is scheduled to be held in two weeks between incumbent President James Michel, Leader of the ruling Lepep party, and Wavel Ramkalawan, leader of the Seychelles National Party.
The agency said Michel, who is vying for a third and final term as president, got 28, 911 votes or 47.76 per cent while Ramkalawan got 20,540 votes or 33.93 per cent. More than 60,000 of the nearly 71,000 eligible voters turned out for the multi-day poll that started Wednesday and ended Saturday.
