The world's top humanitarians are inviting the public to join an appeal urging an end to Syria's civil war.

The heads of several U.N. and other agencies are asking citizens to retweet, share or "like" their appeal on social media platforms.

The appeal says that "more than ever before, the world needs to hear a collective public voice calling for an end to this outrage."

It calls for several "practical" steps to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people, including cease-fires to allow food and other aid to reach civilians, a halt to attacks on civilian infrastructure and an immediate lifting of sieges by all parties to the conflict.

The appeal is available on the website of the U.N. children's agency, UNICEF. Signatories include top officials at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Oxfam, Save the children, World Vision International Care International and others.
