Cancelled summer powwows leave an ache of longing among First Nations communities
Curve Lake pow-wow -- Normally pow wows are grandiose events, with thousands of attendees. Once a staple of summer life all across North America (and ironically Germany), the Pow wow circuit has itself been hit hard by the covid epidemic. To my knowledge, there has only been one pow wow in southern and central Ontario. And as luck would have it, it was in my community. It was a shadow of pow wows past, but the spirit of the celebration was there. It was toned down, augmented by hygiene issues, but where ever Indigenous people dance to the power of the drum, it is a pow wow.
