Meteorite hunters comb woods near New Brunswick border hoping to net $25,000 reward
Example of what type of meteorite expected to be found. Almost a month ago people from New Brunswick and Maine witnessed a rare event— a fireball streaking across the sky. It’s thought a meteorite landed on Earth in the sparsely inhabited border, and since then, people have been combing the area for the extraterrestrial rock that might make them $25,000 richer as the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum offered a reward to whoever brings them a kilogram-size piece. This is an image of ordinary chondrites — the type of meteorite expected to be found as the vast majority are this varietal. Note the black fusion crust — the result of frictional heating as they plunged through Earth’s atmosphere. Also note the smooth, mottled surface. Meteorites’ interior matrix will always be different than the external crust.
