Audi revealed a more aggressive-looking, faster, lighter and technology-packed A5 along with its sports version, the S5, on Thursday in Germany -- nine years after the first editions were introduced.

Audi considers the two-door the “perfect fusion of form and function.” Similar to A3 and A4, this second-generation A5 really gets more of a facelift rather than a new design as is often the case with new generations.

A longer wheelbase, wider and flatter grille, and sharper lines combine for a more aggressive look. Audi says it aimed for an athletic, sporty and elegant appearance.

The A5 is built on a new chassis, comes with new engines and a virtual cockpit on some trims. Audi has been rolling out the interactive displays on other cars in the lineup. Based on the recent A3 test drives, the virtual cockpit may be the biggest change. Audi says the new infortainment system “can recognize input made using everyday language, such as: 'I would like to call Peter.'”

The virtual cockpit is instantly customizable; it will display information important to the driver at the time. Once a smartphone is coupled with the car, it can access a calendar app and know where to direct the driver.

The exterior is remarkable for a new grille and bulged wheel arches which are meant to pronounce the quattro all-wheel drive system.

This is a change from the previous three-dimensional wave-shaped shoulder line.

The A5 will launch in Germany with five engine options (two gasoline and three diesel), which are said to offer 17 per cent more performance while consuming 22 per cent less fuel. Power output ranges from 190 to 286 horsepower.

The S5 comes with a turbocharged V-6 engine that produces 354 horsepower and sprints from a stand to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds.

Increased fuel efficiency results in part from shedding 60 kilograms of weight, achieved through an “intelligent mix of materials and lightweight design,” according to a statement. The new A5 also has a segment-leading drag coefficient of 0.25.

It comes with latest driver assistance systems including adaptive cruise control, which helps a driver even in stop-and-go traffic, and collision avoidance assistance. Audi says this gives us a sneak preview into the future of autonomous driving.

The car is not for sale yet. The company may begin accepting orders in mid July.
