When a vehicle model reaches the end of its generational line, the car company in question "builds out" the outgoing version and then sets up those production lines to manufacturer the reinvented successor.
We now are in the build-out phase for two very popular premium crossovers in Canada, the Mercedes-Benz GLK and the Lexus RX. And there are deals to be had as auto makers rush to clear out the old leftovers to make way for the new arrivals.
This does not happen often. The current GLK, which will be replaced by the 2016 GLC, arrived in showrooms in 2008 as a 2009 model. So six years it's been with us, essentially unchanged. The Lexus RX, another model and a potential GLC/GLK rival, is also about to be replaced by a new version and it's been around unchanged for a similar time frame.
Mercedes-Benz Canada spokesperson JoAnne Caza says the current and outgoing GLK is being sold now only with the Avantgarde package, which in general terms amounts to just about all the possible options and features available with this crossover.
On top of the goodies, Mercedes Canada has a $1,000 factory incentive, plus dealer incentives averaging more than $2,000, and financing deals as low as 0.9 per cent - plus a 0.75 per cent loyalty rate for returning Mercedes buyers on both lease and finance deals. All the sales sweeteners are there to make sure that when the new 2016 GLC arrives in November, there are not GLK stragglers hanging around the lot.
Meantime, Lexus has nearly $8,000 in combined dealer and factory incentives on the table, a portion of which is available with finance rates as low as 2.9 per cent.
To keep pace, rival brands also have offers in play – more than $3,000 in combined sweeteners on the BMW X3 and more than $4,000 combined on the Audi Q5.
Build-out time is deal-making time.
