Nailing a great price on a junky ride is no deal, just a dollar-store disaster that opens the owner up to years of woe and inconvenience.
But what about top-quality cars, light trucks and crossovers loaded up with tasty sales sweeteners? The best of both worlds – high-quality at attractive prices.
And so Deals of the Week went looking for great offers on category winners in the latest J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study or IQS. The IQS is a closely watched study that looks at owner-reported problems during the first 90 days.
Porsche with its platinum-priced vehicles finished first in the study with just 80 problems reported per 100 vehicles (PPV) – or significantly below one problem per car or light truck. But the Kia brand came in second with 86 PPV which is something of a triumph - and notable for bargain hunters because most Kia models are affordable and some are downright steals.

Take the 2016 Kia Sorento SUV (sport-utility vehicle). It's all-new for 2016, very handsome and nicely executed, and it led all midsize SUVs for quality. The reimagined Sorento is also on offer with a $1,500 factory spiff, almost $2,000 of which might be available via a negotiated dealer incentive.
Now if you choose to go with factory financing, Kia will keep $500 on the table and give you a 0.9 per cent rate for 48 or 60 months.
If it's a luxury sedan you want, consider the BMW 528i xDrive. Among midsize luxury cars, the 5-Series is the IQS winner. It's being sold with a winning combination of deals – up to $6,000 in combined factory and dealer incentives.
Two other high-quality models due for major makeovers for 2016 are also excellent buys.
The Hyundai Tucson crossover – the best small SUV in initial quality – is soon to be replaced by a reinvented model for 2016. This means buyers can tap into more than $3,000 in combined incentives and stack a large portion of them with cheap money - 0.99 per cent financing for 48, 60 or 84 months.
Finally, we come to the present version of Chevrolet's Malibu, the IQS leader among midsize sedans. It's on its way out in favour of a revamped Malibu, so it's a bargain: more than $5,000 in combined incentives, a large portion of which can be combined with zero per cent financing for up to 84 months.
Quality has long been the key to success in any business and most especially the car business. When you can combine high quality with a great price, you're looking at a deal with both short- and long-term appeal.
