Canadians are buying fewer cars as preferences are moving toward SUVs and crossovers.

So far in 2016 Canadians have purchased more than 400,000 new cars, a group that includes sedans and coupes. But that is a seven per cent decline in year-over-year sales for the smaller vehicles.

As such, auto makers competing for a shrinking market of new car buyers have made attractive offers available for even the best-selling cars in Canada.

Savvy consumers can now find a good selection of well-equipped sedans for less than $400 per month over a 60 month finance term. Features such as touchscreen displays, heated seats, Bluetooth connectivity, and rearview camera that were once costly options are now standard equipment on many models that start at or below $20,000.

Hyundai

2017 Hyundai Elantra

The Hyundai Elantra is the second best-selling car in Canada year-to-date, and features standard enhancements in the 2017 model including heated front seats, projection headlights and an advanced high-strength steel superstructure which offers ride comfort, superior handling capabilities and enhanced safety. Cash purchase, finance and lease customers can take advantage of a $750 manufacturer incentive on the 2017 Elantra. Financing for up to 60 months is available at zero per cent and leasing for 48 months is available at 1.99 per cent (as compared to 2.49 per cent in July).

Toyota

2016 Toyota Corolla

The Toyota Corolla is the third best-selling car in Canada year-to-date, and comes standard with enhancements such as LED headlamps and Bluetooth phone connectivity with music-streaming . Cash purchase, finance and lease customers can take advantage of a $1,500 after-tax manufacturer incentive on the 2016 Corolla CE. Financing for 60 months is available at 0.49 per cent and leasing for up to 48 months is available at zero per cent. Current Aeroplan members are also eligible to receive up to 5,000 Aeroplan miles upon purchase of a new Toyota.

2016 Chevrolet Cruze

The Chevrolet Cruze is the fifth best-selling car in Canada year-to-date, and comes with standard features including a 7-inch touchscreen with Chevrolet MyLink, Bluetooth phone connectivity with music-streaming and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Cash purchase, finance and lease customers can take advantage of a $1,000 manufacturer incentive on the 2016 Cruze LS (as compared to $500 for finance and zero for cash and lease in July). Financing for up to 60 months is available at zero per cent and leasing for 48 months is available at 1.5 per cent.

2016 Volkswagen Jetta

The Volkswagen Jetta is the seventh best-selling car in Canada year-to-date, and comes with standard enhancements including 5-inch touchscreen entertainment system with CD player and SD card slot, Bluetooth phone connectivity and rearview camera. Cash purchasers can take advantage of a $2,000 manufacturer incentive on the 2016 Jetta Trendline while finance customers are eligible for a $1,000 rebate (as compared to zero in July). Financing for up to 84 months is available at zero per cent and leasing for 48 months is available at 0.99 per cent.
