While auto makers had much to celebrate in 2015 with record setting sales volumes in Canada and the United States, industry executives are quickly back at work gearing up for auto show season which begins in Detroit on January 11.

There were 1.898 million new vehicles delivered in Canada last year, which marks the third consecutive year of annual sales growth. However, headwinds are appearing on the horizon as unit sales in December declined year over year breaking a nearly three-year long monthly sales growth streak. Rising rates, weak currency and softness in the Canadian economy all present risks to vehicle sales in 2016.

As such, new and compelling product will be an ever important component of the competition for market share. Detroit's auto show will be the launching pad for many highly anticipated vehicle re-designs and model releases, with a particular focus on luxury and crossovers.

This means consumers can expect to find great deals on existing models and we've highlighted just some of our favourites below, along with what to watch for from Detroit.

Hyundai

2015 Hyundai Genesis Sedan

Hyundai is planning to launch Genesis as a standalone luxury brand this year and will be introducing the G90 full-sized sedan in Detroit as the replacement to the flagship Hyundai Equus. The current generation Hyundai Genesis Sedan, which is expected to be renamed as the G80 under the standalone brand, delivers tremendous value with high-end features, styling and finishes that compete at the level of German and Japanese luxury peers which come with meaningfully higher price points.

Cash purchasers and lease customers of the 2015 Genesis Sedan can take advantage of a $5,000 manufacturer incentive, while finance customers are entitled to a $3,000 rebate. Financing for up to 72 months is available at zero per cent or 84 months at 0.99 per cent. Leasing for up to 36 months is available at 0.99 per cent or 48 months at 1.99 per cent.

Mercedes-Benz

2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

The re-styled 2017 E-Class will make its global debut in Detroit. The E-Class is a critical model in Mercedes-Benz’s lineup as the second highest volume vehicle behind the C-Class. Highlights expected include many styling cues borrowed from the S-Class including availability of a fully digital instrument panel featuring massive display screens that stretch across the entire dashboard.

Cash purchasers and finance or lease customers of the 2016 E-Class can now take advantage of a $5,000 manufacturer incentive (compared to $1,500 in December). In addition, finance or lease customers may qualify for up to 3 payments waived (up to $850 per lease payment or $1,050 per finance payment).

Audi

Infiniti

2015 Infiniti Q60 Coupe

Infiniti has been undergoing a re-design of its model lineup in recent years beginning with the Q50 sedan which introduced a more aggressive trademark grill. It is expected that many of the styling details from Infiniti’s Q60 concept car shown at last year’s Detroit auto show will make it into the actual production version.

The 2015 Q60 Coupe had a cash incentive of $11,000 in December. While Infiniti no longer advertises an incentive on this model in January, consumers should expect at minimum the same level of discount from dealerships. Our inventory checks show that while selection will be limited, there are remaining vehicles available for those who have an affinity to the 2015 model styling and big savings.
