deals of the week

Canadians continue to soak up new vehicles in record numbers, despite economic and political headwinds that range from Canada's ballooning trade deficit to a weak loonie, slowing economic growth all over the world, soft oil prices, and even the election of an NDP government in Canada's most conservative province, Alberta.

As long as car makers and their dealers keep throwing sales sweeteners at customers, booming sales are likely to continue until Canadians have completely stuffed themselves on new rides. To date, new vehicle sales are up 3.7 per cent from last year, which itself was a record year – and sales spiked 5.7 per cent in April.

What's quite shocking is the range of rewarding deals running across segments and brands. You will find offers applied even to relatively new models in ways we really haven't seen before.

Kia has only just launched an all-new Sorento SUV as a 2016 model, and already it's wearing a $1,000 factory spiff.

Premium brands? The rule of thumb used to be that the upscale brands would avoid discounting at all costs, or risk sullying the precious brands. Yet the savvy shopper should be able to nail down more than $4,500 in combined incentives on a BMW 428i xDrive Gran Coupe – or more than $6,000 in discounts on an Audi S5 3.0 quattro.

Part of the explanation for the deals can be found in ongoing low interest rates which do not appear destined to increase significantly if at all in the foreseeable future. Another piece of the story has to do with better educated and more demanding consumers who are quickly embracing online sales tools and information sources in their quest for the best deal.

Car makers themselves have remained pretty lean even now, years after the great recession and near economic meltdown. That gives them more room on pricing and discounting.

So we're seeing an explosion in the number of educated and demanding buyers. If you're one of them, take note that every make and model is almost certainly on offer with some sort of deal – usually a number of them which when combined slash thousands off the sticker.

In short, it's a buyer's market out there.
