It's Mother's Day on Sunday and rather than wax poetic, we thought it appropriate instead to look back at a noble but misguided pairing of mom and machine.
We speak, of course, about that one-season 1965-66 television wonder, My Mother The Car.
The premise was as absurd as it sounds. Attorney David Crabtree (Jerry Van Dyke) buys a dilapidated 1928 "Porter" touring car at a used car lot because he hears the car call his name in a woman's voice, which later turns out to be that of his deceased mother, Gladys (voiced by Ann Sothern). "Mother" speaks to son through the car's radio.
Talk about rein carnation.
Yes, it was as stupid as it sounds. In 2002, TV Guide named it the second-worst TV show in history, behind only The Jerry Springer Show.
As for the car, "Mother" was crafted from a 1920s Ford Model T Touring car by George Barris, the guiding light who modified the Lincoln Futura into the Batmobile. Mom had a 327 Chevy V8 engine with automatic transmission.
Which leads us to other famous television rides. Sorry, no moms - try the Life section.
