Tupperware Brands

When we were little, daddy was always telling mommy to throw away her Tupperware containers. "It's bad enough having to eat your food once," he'd say. But not everyone minds leftovers, judging by Tupperware's first-quarter results. Boosted by strong sales in Asia and Europe, profit nearly doubled and the company hiked its 2010 earnings forecast. Shareholders are coming back for seconds.

The latest conversation between Starbucks staff:

Barista #1: "Who are these people in our store?"

Barista #2: "Those are customers."

Barista #1: "But … where did they come from?"

Barista #2: "They went away during the recession. Now they're back."

Barista #1: "So that's why our profits are soaring?"

Barista #2: "Yes. Now shut up and start frothing."

Blah blah blah … iPhone … blah blah blah … iPod … blah blah blah … iPad … blah blah blah … second-quarter profit of $3-billion … blah blah blah … revenue of $13.5-billion … blah blah blah … Steve Jobs is a genius … blah blah blah … stock is soaring … blah blah blah … world domination by Apple … blah blah blah …

Bad idea: Putting money under your mattress. Good idea: Investing money in a mattress maker. Tempur-Pedic shares surged after the company posted better-than-expected first-quarter results and raised its outlook, bolstered by the recovering economy and strong sales of its new Tempur-Cloud mattress line. Shareholders are having sweet dreams.

Sold Teck Resources at the depths of the financial crisis, did you? Here's another reason to kick yourself: The diversified mining company declared a dividend for the first time in two years, after it suspended its payout when the global economy hit the wall in 2008. True, the dividend's less than half of what it was before, but it's better than nothing. And a whole lot better than selling at the bottom.
