A humorous look at the companies that caught our eye, for better or worse, this week

Fortress Paper

This Vancouver-based company has developed a novel process for the sharing of highly-sensitive data that is invulnerable to hackers and ne'er do wells. It's called "paper," and investors are warming up to the idea of cutting down trees and processing the pulp to create the sophisticated banknotes and passports the 21st Century demands.

Back in my day, executives from Smart Technologies would have been punished for letting their stock fall so far, so quickly. Teacher would have sent them to clean the erasers and bang them together until they were coughing on the dust. But since their main product is a digital board that has rendered chalk redundant, a reboot may have to do.

Hey buddy, I have a stock tip for you. Did you hear that Merck & Co., Inc. and Cardiome Pharma announced Phase III study results comparing investigational compound Vernakalant intravenous to amiodarone injection? Er, that's good right? Like, that has to be good for Cardiome. Right? Buy!

Yeehaw, drill baby drill! BP PLC plugged the gusher in the Gulf. And it gets better - turns out two thirds of the oil is totally gone. Evaporated like sugar in a cup of oily tea, as if it never happened. That means investors are once again allowed to speak openly about Transocean in polite company, even though it owned the rig that drilled the ill-fated well.

Turns out some people still smoke tobacco. Not enough of them though, if you're an investor in Universal. It seems the company "faces some challenges" because of "decreased customer demand." It's not all bad - the company posted a $25-million (U.S.) profit, which is about what free-agent advertising icon Joe Camel is asking for on the open market.
