American Water ( (AWK) ) just unveiled an update.
On February 26, 2026, the Maryland Public Service Commission approved a joint settlement granting Maryland American Water, a subsidiary of American Water, a consolidated annualized water revenue increase of about $2 million, its first rate adjustment since 2019. The order reflects the company’s view of a 9.75% return on equity and capital structure aligned with a series of investments since its last rate case.
The rate hike supports roughly $22 million in completed capital and infrastructure projects in treatment and distribution systems since 2019, and will be phased in over two years. Residential customers in Bel Air using 4,000 gallons per month will see bill increases of about $10 per month from February 26, 2026 and another $10 from January 1, 2027, while Severn District customers move from a quarterly to monthly flat fee with a modest increase, alongside continued access to customer assistance and affordability programs.
The most recent analyst rating on (AWK) stock is a Buy with a $148.00 price target. To see the full list of analyst forecasts on American Water stock, see the AWK Stock Forecast page.
Spark’s Take on AWK Stock
According to Spark, TipRanks’ AI Analyst, AWK is a Neutral.
AWK scores as moderate: strong regulated-utility earnings visibility and constructive guidance/M&A progress are balanced by weak free-cash-flow generation with continued reliance on external financing and elevated leverage. Technicals are mildly supportive but not in a clear long-term uptrend, and valuation looks only reasonable given the ~23x P/E despite the ~2.5% yield.
