Methanex to Indefinitely Idle Trinidad Titan Methanol Plant Amid Gas Supply Crunch

Tipranks - Tue Jun 30, 4:38PM CDT

End of Quarter Sale - 70% Off

The latest announcement is out from Methanex ( (TSE:MX) ).

On June 29, 2026, Methanex announced it will begin indefinitely idling its Titan methanol plant in Trinidad and Tobago after failing to secure a new natural gas contract ahead of the current agreement’s expiry in the third quarter of 2026. The 860,000‑tonne‑per‑year facility will be placed in a preserved state to maintain the option of a restart if gas market conditions materially improve.

The company noted that Titan, like the already‑idled Atlas joint‑venture plant in Trinidad and Tobago, is not currently contributing to Adjusted EBITDA or Adjusted Free Cash Flow, and it does not expect material cash costs from the shutdown. Methanex framed the move as a response to structurally tight gas supply and commercially unviable conditions in the country, emphasizing its focus on long‑term shareholder value and support for affected employees while it monitors future gas supply developments.

The most recent analyst rating on (TSE:MX) stock is a Buy

Spark’s Take on MX Stock

According to Spark, TipRanks’ AI Analyst, MX is a Neutral.

The score is driven primarily by mixed financial performance (strong cash generation but weak/volatile profitability and leverage risk) and strong technical trend/momentum. Earnings call guidance is supportive with expectations for materially stronger Q2 results and continued deleveraging, while valuation is held back by the negative P/E and only modest dividend yield.
