On April 21, 2026, Northern Trust reported first-quarter 2026 net income of $525.5 million, or $2.71 per diluted share, up from $466.0 million and $2.42 in the fourth quarter of 2025 and $392.0 million and $1.90 in the first quarter of 2025. Chief executive Michael O’Grady said the bank entered 2026 with “strong financial momentum,” citing improved organic growth, elevated client activity and favorable market and rate conditions that produced over 700 basis points of operating leverage, a 32% pre-tax margin and a 43% jump in earnings per share. Return on average common equity improved to 17.4% and the company returned 100% of earnings to shareholders, underscoring enhanced profitability and capital return even as management acknowledged ongoing global and economic uncertainty and emphasized continued support for clients and strengthening of its global franchise.

Spark’s Take on NTRS Stock

According to Spark, TipRanks’ AI Analyst, NTRS is a Neutral.

The score is held back primarily by mixed financial performance (sharp 2025 revenue decline, elevated leverage, and cash-flow volatility) and weak near-term technical momentum. These are partly offset by a constructive earnings-call outlook with improved medium-term targets and solid capital returns, plus a reasonable P/E and moderate dividend yield.
