The latest update is out from Steel Dynamics ( (STLD) ).

On June 17, 2026, Steel Dynamics issued second-quarter 2026 earnings guidance of $3.51 to $3.55 per diluted share, up from $2.78 in the first quarter and $2.01 a year earlier, despite a $16 million reduction from asset write-downs tied to relocating a planned satellite aluminum recycled slab center from Arizona to Columbus, Mississippi. The company cited meaningfully higher profitability in steel operations driven by strong demand and wider metal margins, steady metals recycling results, slightly lower steel fabrication earnings amid higher input costs but a backlog nearly 40% above last year, significantly improved aluminum earnings as its Columbus aluminum mill ramps up, and disclosed repurchasing $170 million of its stock, ahead of its planned July 20, 2026 earnings release.

Steel Dynamics reported robust second-quarter steel demand, supported by low inventories and strength in non-residential construction, energy, automotive and industrial sectors, and expects further volume gains in fabrication through year-end 2026 and into 2027. The aluminum operations showed operational milestones, including two of three cold mills running and the first CASH line producing automotive-qualified material, underscoring the company’s ongoing diversification into aluminum while it manages strategic project risks such as the Arizona-to-Mississippi relocation and continues returning capital via share repurchases.

Spark’s Take on STLD Stock

According to Spark, TipRanks’ AI Analyst, STLD is a Outperform.

The score reflects strong technical strength (price above all major moving averages and positive MACD) and a solid financial base with manageable leverage and continued profitability. This is tempered by weaker cash conversion in the latest TTM period, a moderate (not bargain) valuation with a low dividend yield, and execution risk around the aluminum ramp despite management’s confidence and improving operational indicators.
