Many Canadians want to age in place, choosing to grow old in their own homes and communities while having access to social supports, services and equipment that allow them to live independently and safely.
Nearly all Canadians (91 per cent) want to age at home as long as possible, according to a 2024 report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information. Another study found that 96 per cent of Canadians aged 65 and older said they would do everything possible to avoid going into a long-term care facility.
But the reality of aging at home can be a financial and emotional burden. It’s an expensive proposition and can affect family members who put their lives on hold to care for relatives, sometimes have drawing from their savings to hire help, renovate homes and pay for medications.
