For fans of Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, TIFF’s September 20 screening of the film – with an appearance by star Kim Novak and a live orchestral score by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra – will be a dizzying delight for the senses. Viewers will note that Novak’s signature style in the film – a simply cut coat, a curve-defining dress, a knock-out piece of jewellery – plays well in the present day, too.
As is often the case with Edith Head’s costume designs (and most clothing of that era), fabrics are key in contemporary examples of the look. Lemaire’s cashmere long-sleeved dress is a soon-to-be wardrobe staple, while 424 Fifth’s chic (but sensibly heeled) suede pumps are the perfect fall pair.
To bring a little intrigue into your abode, West Elm’s nod to mid-century decor – in this case taking the form of a mustard-hued lamp – riffs off the film’s 1958 release, and House of Rym’s swirling plate would make Saul Bass proud.
