Jamie Oliver
Rebecca McAlpine: I am often concerned about the quantity of butter in oat-bar recipes. Do you have a nice recipe for a traditional, plain, soft oat bar? Something to have as a nutritional snack, after a workout, when travelling or as a healthy alternative for children's food.
Jamie Oliver: I totally agree – most of these ready-made bars will be full of sugar and not-so-nice additives. I've experimented with my own healthier oat bars and flapjacks, and my kids love them. I'd recommend blitzing up a mix of nuts, such as pecans and hazelnuts, seeds and dried fruit (iron-rich dates work super well here) until they're nicely chopped together, then pulse them with rolled oats, a little oil and a tiny bit of maple syrup for sweetness. You won't need to bake these, so simply cut them into little rounds – be mindful of portion control – then freeze or store for a couple of weeks.
