Pomegranate season in North America runs from about October to January. This fruit is delicious and full of nutrients but can be messy to work with. Here's the best way to deseed.

Cut the crown off the pomegranate (the part with the "crown-like" protrusion).

Then score the pomegranate into four quarters. Just cut though the exterior skin, do not cut through the entire fruit.

Using your fingers along the scored edges break the pomegranate into four wedges.

To dislodge the seeds, take one of the wedges and hold it over a bowl. Tap the back firmly with a tablespoon. The arils should fall out.

Or fill a bowl with cold water and submerge a pomegranate wedge. Push the seeds out under the water using your fingers. They will sink and the pith will float to the top where you can easily pick it out.

Strain and store the seeds in an airtight container.
