The flagship brand of a two-year-old Brampton, Ont., craft subsidiary of the large Saint John-based independent Moosehead, Barking Squirrel recently moved from bar taps to the retail sphere with a launch at Ontario LCBO stores. It's darker than most big-brand lagers, somewhere between mid-amber and dark orange, with a rich, medium body to match. It starts out vaguely sweet and malty, then delivers a lightly bitter, hoppy finish. Even if you're not a fan of the parent company, you may like this distinctive brew – the best squirrel sidekick a moose ever had since Rocky & Bullwinkle.
