Spain's great modernist winemaker, Palacios is best known for l'Ermita, an iconic red that sells for $800 a bottle in Canada when you can find it. Worth the price? Certainly, assuming you co-founded Google or lack the time or inclination to comparison shop for something with a more favourable quality-price ratio. Try this Palacios gem instead and save yourself about $780. It's no l'Ermita but it does come from the same region – Priorat – that Palacios helped revive. And it conveys something of the master's deft hand. A blend of grenache, carignan, cabernet sauvignon and syrah, it's full-bodied and – like l'Ermita – very ripe, with a sweet-sappy core set against a slightly rigid backbone of light tannins. It could improve with two to five years in the cellar. $23.99 in Man., $23.45 in Que.
