Launched in 2007 and new to Ontario, Bulldog was founded by a former investment banker, Anshuman Vohra, as a creative exit from Wall Street. The name was inspired by the "bulldog spirit" embodied by that famous gin guzzler Winston Churchill. You've got to love the bottle, with its dark, opaque glass, puffy shoulders and wide neck ringed with raised studs to resemble a dog collar. It's not so tough on the inside, though. This is smooth, modern gin, with a relatively tame juniper profile; no shaving-cream essence here. From juniper it quickly moves into vaguely sweet lemon-floral territory and progresses with exotic spices. Soft and spicy – gin a vodka drinker might like very much. Unleash this Bulldog on some Campari and vermouth for a Negroni. It even works well with soda on the rocks with a lime wedge. $35.98 in Nfld.
