pick of the week

I would be hard-pressed to single out my favourite Glenfarclas whisky. The company, a family-owned independent in a country where most distilleries are controlled by big corporations, produces superb Highland malts. This 17-year-old is a model of balance, with sumptuous richness that carries a panoply of flavours. Smooth, with ample sweetness from time in casks that once contained sherry, it suggests dried stone fruit, roasted nuts and butterscotch enlivened by substantial yet integrated peat smoke. My favourite Glenfarclas? Maybe. Just maybe. $99.99 in B.C., $94.50 in Quebec.
