Schola Sarmenti, a producer in the southern Italian region of Puglia, does not shy away from big wines. It makes a dry red that tips the scales at 18-per-cent alcohol, for example, the sort of level associated with fortified port. This one, at 13.5 per cent, is relatively timid but still comes out swinging like a heavyweight. Imagine a bowl of chocolate-coated dried blueberries and espresso beans. A red wine worthy of Starbucks. Available in Ontario.
