Mark Kelley
Mark Kelley, host of Connect with Mark Kelley, the nightly news program on CBC News Network, avoids performance running. Instead of logging distance, he mixes up terrain and hill work, getting a jolt out of his jog.
When did you start running?
I started running in high school. I had problems sleeping, and my gym teacher suggested I try jogging. I've been running from my stress ever since, four to five times a week.
Where do you run?
I live in Toronto's Beaches neighbourhood, so I combine runs along the boardwalk and on the sandy beach itself to mix it up, plus I add in the hills in the neighbourhood. I like to push myself every time I go out the door.
What song gets you started?
Is There a Ghost by Band of Horses as well as Renegades of Funk by Rage Against the Machine get my blood pumping to help fuel my legs. I tend to be a slow starter, so I need a musical kick in the ass to get me going.
What track gets you up a hill?
My current man-versus-world song is Rise Up by Cypress Hill. Nothing can break me when that song is in my ears.
What song gives you an energy boost?
It's an oldie, but it keeps me running - I'd Love to Change the World by Ten Years After. I run in the mornings to prepare for my long days at work. I like to feel bulletproof, even if that feeling only lasts as long as the song.
What tune concludes your run?
Thank You by Led Zeppelin. Another dinosaur rock song, but it's got this wonderful mixed tempo that keeps rhythm with my pace.
